The Flaningan Family
As a native of Columbus Ohio, Josh grew up in three different Grace Brethren but settled back where his family started at Eastside GBC, during his high school years. It was during those years that he engaged his faith and it became real. After going on two missions trips to Mexico he was able to see how God was able to use him in a foreign land. It would be four years later that he would understand to what extreme God could use him.
Josh has his formal training in agricultural mechanics and achieved an associate degree from Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio. Josh received a call from God in 2001 and by the end of the year he was serving a one year term in the Central African Republic at the Yaloke mission station garage. At the end of the term he had fallen in love the people and country around him. After arriving home he felt a great sense that he had left things in Africa unfinished. His heart would continue to break as he thought about sharing the named of Christ not just proclaiming Him in your action.
Rachel was born in Montana, and raised in Montana and South Dakota in a family of six children. Growing up in a Christian home, she never remembers a time when she did not know Jesus Christ as her Savior. She attended nursing school while living with her grandparents on their ranch in Miles City, Montana. During this time, both of them passed away within a month of each other. During this hard and lonely time was when she grew profoundly in her trust in God. After working as a nurse for a year, she attended a semester at Frontier School of the Bible in LaGrange, WY. This was also a time of great growth. Upon returning home, she began working in a Dialysis Unit, and praying for God’s continued leading in her life.
Feeling called to go to bible school and desiring to have a wife, Josh worked for a Honda supplier building car seats. It would be three years until the voice of God was so loud that he knew it was time to act. In the fall of 2006 Josh started Vineyard Leadership Institute. By the time he graduated in the spring of 2007, he and Rachel had become engaged.. Unlike most people they knew, Josh and Rachel met on the internet. With 1200 miles between them, Josh moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota and married Rachel in June of 2007. Josh worked as an agricultural mechanic and Rachel a registered nurse.
In the spring of 2008, Josh and Rachel went to Africa with Integrated Community Development International to investigate a mission’s opportunity. In the pursuit of finding God’s will, Josh and Rachel have joined Encompass World Partners. Where Josh hopes to start a vocational training program, and do discipleship as well as take care of the maintenance needs of the mission. Rachel will use her nursing skills where she can, but much of her time with be focused on their daughter Emily, who was born in December of 2008.

Dave is passionate about seeing the nations become worshippers of Jesus Christ. After studying at Grace College and Seminary (B.A. ‘82, MDiv ‘87), Dave and his wife, Sue (B.A. ‘87), joined the Steve Bailey family and moved to one of the world’s megacities, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their ministries included evangelism, church planting and leadership training. Dave was one of the principal architects of ACTS (Apostolic Church-planting Team Strategy), which later spread to other parts of Latin America and the world.
Dave and Sue returned to the US in 2000 so that Dave could lead Encompass World Partners (formerly Grace Brethren International Missions), with headquarters now in Atlanta, Georgia. Currently, Encompass World Partners deploys cross-cultural workers in the areas of evangelism, church planting, leadership training and holism ministries on five continents and 33 countries. Dave travels extensively to provide training and develop partnerships with national churches and leaders. One of his current passions is to prepare organizations like Encompass to be embraced and led by the emerging generation of leaders.

Joy (Barnhart) grew up in a Christian home in Little Meadows, Pennsylvania. Through the influence of godly parents and her church, she accepted the Lord as her personal Saviour at the age of seven. Joy joined the Grace Brethren Church of Columbus, Ohio, in the spring of 1982.
Mark grew up in Columbus, Ohio. When he was nine years old, during a Vacation Bible School, Mark realized his need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Shortly thereafter he began attending the Columbus Grace Brethren Church and in 1968 became a member there.
Mark and Joy met while students at Word of Life Bible Institute in upper state New York. They both continued their education at Columbia Bible College (now Columbis International University). They were married during the summer of 1980 and were graduated from college in 1981. Their interest in missions grew as a result of these schools and the great exposure they received to the needs of the world. The Sims were personally challenged to consider the field of France and began to pursue this idea. As a result of attending the Euro-Missions Institute in 1982, Mark and Joy felt God leading them to France to serve in a church-planting capacity with Grace Brethren International Missions.
Mark entered Grace Theological Seminary in January of 1983 and was graduated in May of 1986. While living in Warsaw, the Sims attended Warsaw Community Grace Brethren Church.
Mark, Joy and their infant son, Gabriel, left for language school in France in 1988. They served in Le Creusot for about two years, then in Mâcon for about eight, and since 1999, live in a centuries-old stone house in a charming medieval village a half-hour southwest of Lyon. Through personal evangelism, they are seeking to begin a new church in their area & also serve in various capacities in the Lyon GBC. Joy is heavily involved in quilting as a means of meeting women. She teaches in several area clubs. Gabriel currently lives in Winona Lake, where he is pursuing further education.
Mark recently accepted the new responsibility of administrating the Doctor of Ministries program in the Central African Republic. This is a joint venture between GBIM, Grace Seminary and Grace Seminary in the CAR. In preparation for this ministry, Mark completed a D. Min. degree in 2012 and the Sims recently completed a year long sabbatical in Winona Lake for this purpose. Mark will be making several extended trips to the CAR each year.
Mark and Joy are members of the Polaris Grace Brethren Church, Worthington, Ohio.
